Cromwell College: Unique secondary school experience

In 1994 Cromwell College developed a unique blend of senior secondary education and outdoor and lifeskills training. Since then more than 375 year 12 and 13 students have had an amazing experience in the heart of Central Otago.

“Our students come to us from throughout NZ and around the world,” says Cromwell College principal Mason Stretch. “Our programmes cater for the academic, personal, social and sporting sides of life.”

The Outdoor Pursuits Programme challenges students in weekend activities including yachting, kayaking, mountain biking, rock climbing, tramping, skiing and snowboarding. Fully qualified instructors teach the students and NZQA credits are available in most of the activities.

The Central Otago Golf Academy provides regular mid-week practice sessions and the programme is overseen by local coach Colin Cowie and Central Otago professionals. Academy golfers will benefit from over 70 practice sessions supervised by our resident coach including video analysis, professional coaching at The Hills on a regular basis, regular competition in local tournaments.

Students in both programmes commit to a fulltime course of study in a wide range of subjects at NCEA Levels 1-3. There is an excellent staff-student ratio and the school prides itself on the positive relationships between the staff and students.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the student’s experience at Cromwell College is the Life-Skills programme at the College Apartments, a specially designed student hostel where students live together in self contained flats of five or six. Each student has their own bedroom and apart from dining/lounges in each flat there is an excellent common room with pool and foosball tables plus a purpose built home theatre. A modern computer suite is included in the complex features.

Students get involved in extra curricular sporting and cultural activities within the school and wider community which broadens their experiences immensely. With the assistance of resident adult Managers the students lean to cook, clean, plan menus and shopping lists. During the year they will develop time management skills and interpersonal social skills that will prove invaluable as they move into the wider community after formal secondary education ends.
