12 & 13 AUGUST 2006

DINNER PLAIN VILLAGE (Mt Hotham)

At the picturesque Alpine village of Dinner Plain, 9km east of Mount Hotham in the Victorian snowfields, the arrival of snow means Altitude 5000 Sled Dog Group, the organisers of the spectacular ADVANCE SLED DOG CHALLENGE moves into top gear to prepare for this unique snow race weekend in August. Celebrating 13 years of successful sled dog racing this race is held over the weekend of 12th & 13th August with 2, 3, 4 and 6 dog teams competing. This annual event showcases the top dogs of sled dog racing in Australia and is unique in being the only Australian snow-based race of its kind. Over 65 Mushers (dog team drivers) and in excess of 350 sled dogs are expected to compete in this year?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s event. The race is held over two days with times recorded on both days. The team who successfully completes the course both days in the combined fastest time wins. Siberian Huskies and Alaskan Malamutes are the most common breeds of dogs raced. They are strong competitors as snow is part of their natural habitat. The Siberian Huskies are quick on their feet, whereas the Alaskan Malamutes are known for their endurance over long distances. In recent years, more unusual breeds have also competed including Labradors, Hounds and Shepamutes (a cross between German Shepherds and Malamutes). Spectators attending the weekend are in for a unique experience. They will see and hear plenty of enthusiastic sled teams comprised of howling and excited snow-dogs. There will be many spectators and media jostling for the best vantage points. Altitude 5000 Race volunteers directing traffic, crowds and dog teams into position. Tour the ?¢‚Ǩ?ìSled Dog Park?¢‚Ǩ¬ù (race pits) ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äú where all the dog teams are housed, see sleds and race equipment being assembled, Mushers tending their dogs, checking their equipment and the diehards rechecking their equipment. Start and Finish chutes bathed in colourful bunting and sponsor?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s banners. Freight sled pulling demonstrations, snow ball throwing and a snowman building competition for the kids. BBQ, souvenir stands, pumped competitors, presentation and celebration. All of this makes for a unique, colourful and exciting winter carnival.
