NZ Avalanche Advisory

The Wanaka region saw another serious avalanche involvement today.

A party of five was ski touring in the Treble Cone backcountry, when they triggered a soft, persistent slab avalanche in steep and complex terrain.

One skier was fully buried, approximately 1m deep. Fortunately, he was able to create an air pocket around his face as the avalanche slowed.

A small party rescue was carried out immediately. Thanks to a high-level of training and knowledge of their rescue equipment, the party were able to reach and clear the victims airway within seven minutes.

One of the party was able to notify rescuers immediately using an Inreach device and they were all transported safely back to Treble Cone by helicopter.

No injuries were reported.

The group have submitted a comprehensive public observation. View this via the public observations tab on avalanche.net.nz

Sharing information of this nature is crucial to help improve everyone’s safety, trip planning and decision making in the backcountry. A huge thanks to the group for sharing such a comprehensive and timely report.
