My Month in Alaska: Timberland Motion Maddsen Boot
Real Review - GEAR ⚙️

Reviews come in all shapes and sizes. Many are simply regurgitations of material pulled from the web, while others are supplied directly by clients or written by staff members with the carrot of advertising revenue looming in the background. These promotional pieces, while sometimes useful, lack the independence that readers truly value. Then there’s the REAL REVIEW; where a writer offers their candid opinion. It’s important to remember that this represents just one person’s perspective, not necessarily the official stance of Adventure magazine. But that’s precisely what makes it valuable: it’s a REAL REVIEW, unfiltered and authentic.

We just wrapped up an incredible month in Alaska, and these Timberland Maddsen boots (low) were my constant companions through everything the Last Frontier threw at me. Here’s my honest take after putting them through the ultimate field test.
Over the course of a month, I climbed countless hills with loose scree and rocky terrain, trudging through dense forests where every step required navigating roots, fallen logs, bear poop and unpredictable ground. I spent several days traversing various glaciers where one wrong step could mean disaster. Between adventures, I even wore them out to dinner in Anchorage a few times – they clean up surprisingly well.
Waterproofing that actually works. The TimberDry™ waterproof membrane is no joke. I walked through boggy tundra, crossed countless streams, and dealt with glacier melt-off daily. My feet stayed completely dry throughout. Even during those classic Alaskan downpours where you’re soaked head to toe, these boots kept doing their job. The premium Timberland leather held up beautifully against constant moisture.
The rubber lug outsole and climbing rubber tip saved me more times than I can count. On glacier ice, wet rocks, and muddy forest floors, I felt confident in every step. The traction was especially impressive when scrambling over boulders and navigating steep, loose terrain.
The OrthoLite® footbed and EVA combination really delivered. Even after hours of hiking and climbing, my feet weren’t screaming at me. The polyester lining with recycled materials felt good against my skin and managed moisture well during intense activity. I was impressed that boots this rugged could be this comfortable for extended wear.
Durability Under Extreme Conditions
After a month of absolute abuse – sharp rocks, ice tools scraping against them, constant wet conditions, and general backcountry punishment – these boots still look and perform like they could handle a lot more. The leather shows some character marks but no concerning wear, and all the stitching remains solid.
The Bottom Line
For the price of around $350, these boots earned every penny. They handled everything from technical glacier travel to casual dinners without missing a beat. If you’re planning serious outdoor adventures where failure isn’t an option, the Motion Maddsen boots deliver the reliability you need. Alaska tested them thoroughly, and they passed with flying colours.
Would I repurchase them? Absolutely. I’m already eyeing a second pair for my next adventure.
Best for: Serious hikers/trampers, mountaineers, anyone who needs bombproof waterproof footwear that can transition from wilderness to civilisation seamlessly.
