Red Bull Defiance X4

Racing at New Zealand’s toughest multi-sport weekend event, the Red Bull Defiance in Wanaka, just stepped up a notch with the launch of a new team event called the Red Bull Defiance X4.
The event is aimed at a wide cross section of competitors with just thirty race spots available. Entries open on Monday 20th August at 9am.
“The event takes the existing concept and opens it up to teams of four people rather than the current pairs,” says Red Bull Defiance Race Director Bex Law. “It’s a relay style concept we wanted to bring to fruition to cater for larger groups of friends and workmates who are keen to share the load of what is a mega multisport weekend.”
Each Red Bull Defiance X4 team will have two team members racing at any one time together while the other two members support the team. The event races over the legendary Red Bull Defiance course designed by New Zealand Ironman and champion multisporter Braden Currie. The six stage course takes in Wanaka’s spectacular mountain trails, remote high country locations and provides an unforgettable competitor experience.
“The twist is that the X4 teams are free to choose which two people will complete each stage of the event depending on their individual skill set or sporting background,” says Law. She says some key highlights will be X4 teams having to complete a mystery four person challenge somewhere on the course and paddling inflatable canoes down the Clutha River.
“We see this as the perfect introduction to Red Bull Defiance with the event open to mixed, all male or female teams. Each team member must complete a minimum of two stages and a maximum of four. This allows teams to be tactical in their selection and to sub in and out of their preferred stages.”
Red Bull Defiance X4 teams will provide their own double or single kayaks to paddle across Lake Wanaka while inflatable canoes will be provided by the race organisers. Live online tracking will be provided with each team carrying a Yellow Brick GPS tracking device.
The event will run on the 19th and 20th January 2019 from Edgewater Resort in Lake Wanaka.
“While it’s not for the faint hearted, the new Red Bull Defiance X4 event goes someway to allowing a wider cross section of multisporters and weekend warriors to get a taste of the action and race alongside the elites of the sport,” says Law. “It’s going to be an epic experience for teams lucky enough to gain a spot.”
