The ‘Eddie’ is on Yellow Alert

NEWS - EVENT

What Is “The Eddie”?

“The Eddie,” formally known as the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational, is more than just a surf contest; it’s a cultural phenomenon and a tribute to one of surfing’s most legendary figures, Eddie Aikau.

Held at the iconic Waimea Bay on Oahu’s North Shore, this event only happens under the rarest and most extreme conditions. Waves must reach a towering minimum of 20 feet Hawaiian scale—translating to face heights of 40 feet or more—to greenlight the competition. It’s not an annual event; the Eddie happens only when the ocean delivers swells big enough to honour Aikau’s legacy as a fearless waterman and lifeguard.

The Alert

As of now, the event is under a “yellow alert,” meaning conditions are brewing, and there’s a real possibility the Eddie could run this weekend. Forecast models indicate a monstrous swell rolling toward Oahu, prompting organizers to keep a close watch. If conditions align, Sunday might see some of the most thrilling big-wave surfing action the sport has to offer.

Extreme Caution

While big wave surfers who have been invited to compete in the Eddie, chew their nails and watch the forecast. Honolulu Ocean Safety is issuing stark warnings. The incoming surf is expected to be life-threatening, with waves powerful enough to sweep the unprepared off their feet—or worse. Lt. John Hoogsteden of Ocean Safety emphasizes, “Stay away from the water. Stay off the sand. These are conditions for professionals only.”

“The Eddie” is built on respect—for the ocean, for Eddie Aikau, and for the Hawaiian culture. When Waimea Bay roars to life and the invitational runs, it’s a spectacle unlike any other in the surfing world. The lineup consists of elite invitees who are not just chasing glory but honouring the spirit of Eddie Aikau himself, who famously risked his life as a lifeguard and disappeared during a heroic rescue mission in 1978.

This weekend, all eyes are on Waimea. Will the Bay truly call the day? Stay tuned—it’s a waiting game dictated by the ocean’s raw power.
