“Structures” is a creative and artistic approach to mountain films. What is new in this film however, is the critical thematization of the interplay between culture and nature, which creates a field of tension in which today’s mountain recreationalists almost always find themselves in. Nature, perceived as untouched and pure, is basically an extension of urban space: a deception that is skilfully referred to in Mackowitz’s film. However, Hanno Mackowitz goes one step further. The structures created by humans in nature, regarded as supposedly disturbing and “only” necessary, become a second actor in his film. Together with the skier Lorraine Huber, they form two mutually influencing and interdependent elements – one would be futile without the other.
