In a tragic turn of events, two athletes collapsed and died while competing at the World Triathlon Championships in Torremolinos, Spain. The participants, from Mexico and Great Britain, were racing in the Age-Group Sprint Distance category.
World Triathlon released a statement confirming the deaths, offering condolences to the athletes’ families, friends, and the broader triathlon community. The Mexican Triathlon Federation identified 79-year-old Roger Mas Clomber as one of the victims, while the British competitor remains unnamed.
The Age-Group category, made up of non-professional athletes, features a 750m swim, 20km cycle, and 5km run. No cause of death has been announced, but the event, which hosts over 5,500 athletes, continues under a somber atmosphere.
This loss serves as a stark reminder of the physical demands placed on endurance athletes, even at the amateur level, and casts a heavy shadow over the championships.
